Most backyards are just... grass. And there's nothing wrong with that - until you realize you're never actually out there. No reason to be. This Hartland backyard was exactly that before we got involved. The homeowner wanted something they'd actually use, a space that felt intentional and welcoming, not just an afterthought behind the house.

What we designed here is a full outdoor living setup using Unilock pavers. The main patio runs off the back of the house and connects to a circular fire pit area - two distinct zones that flow naturally into each other. The rectangular field of the main patio uses a clean running bond pattern with a darker border, while the fire pit circle transitions into a hexagonal cobble pattern that gives it its own identity. It's a lot of detail work, and that's exactly the point.

The built-in planter walls are a big part of what makes this feel finished rather than just functional. They frame the space, add some softness with the plantings, and eliminate the constant mowing and edging that comes with open lawn edges. That's the thing most people don't think about up front - pavers and well-designed hardscape actually reduce the maintenance load on a yard, not increase it.

We also incorporated a herringbone-patterned transition strip that connects the patio to the existing deck staircase. Small detail, but it ties everything together and keeps the space from looking like pieces that were just dropped in. Every section has a purpose. Nothing is filler.

Unilock products are what we spec on jobs like this because they hold up. They're engineered for Michigan winters, and the color consistency stays strong over time. If you've got a backyard that's just sitting there, this is the kind of work that actually changes how you live in your home.
